Tour Plan

Your journey begins from Delhi. Since time is important for a good trekking experience, we suggest you meet at Botanical Garden Metro Station (Gate No. 4) between 7 pm and 10 pm. Chopta is about 450 km from Delhi and takes around 14 hours to reach.

Route: The route takes you through Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Roorkee, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, and Ukhimath before arriving in Chopta the next day. The first part of the journey to Rishikesh is overnight. After that, get ready for another 8 hours of a somewhat challenging but incredibly scenic mountain drive! Most of the trip follows the mountainside, with the river flowing below. (Make sure to take pictures at the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers at Devprayag!)

About 35 km after Rudraprayag, you’ll take the road to Kedarnath. You'll travel through Agastyamuni, named after the famous sage Augustya, and Ukhimath, known as the winter seat of Kedarnath, before reaching Chopta around lunchtime.

After a long journey, this early arrival gives you time to relax and rejuvenate. If you’re not too tired, you can explore the picturesque campsite or homestay, which is a treat for photographers. The surrounding forests look like something out of a movie. We recommend going to bed early so you’re well-rested for the trek to Chandrashila, also known as the Moon Peak, the next day.

Today is the highlight of your trip! You’ll trek to the summit of Chandrashila, one of the most stunning peaks you’ll ever see (weather permitting). According to legend, this is where Lord Rama meditated after defeating the demon king Ravana. Another story says the moon god Chandra performed penance here.

The trek from Chopta to Tungnath is about 3 km, and then it’s another 1.5 km of a steep climb to Chandrashila. The trail from Chopta to Tungnath is paved, but it becomes rougher as you head from Tungnath to Chandrashila. History lovers will enjoy visiting the Tungnath Temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world, and one of the Panch Kedar temples. Legend has it that Lord Shiva, disguised as a bull, revealed his hands here after the Pandavas sought his forgiveness for killing their kin during the Kurukshetra war.

The trek is beautiful but steep, with the landscape changing as you climb higher. Trees disappear, replaced by shrubs. It usually takes about 3 hours to reach Tungnath and another hour to reach the Chandrashila summit. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Garhwal and Kumaon mountains, including peaks like Kedarnath, Mandani, Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Nanda Ghunti, and more. After taking in the views and snapping some photos, you’ll return to Chopta by the same route, taking about 30 minutes to reach Tungnath and another 60-90 minutes to reach Chopta.

Your day starts with a visit to Sari, a charming village at 6,601 feet. You’ll leave Chopta early, around 8 am, after breakfast, to reach Sari. The trek to Deoriatal is about 2.3 km, with a mildly steep, stone-paved trail. Along the way, you’ll pass a temple and a few houses.

Deoriatal, like Chandrashila, is rich in local legends. According to one, the Pandavas stopped at Deoriatal when they were thirsty and faced a test of wisdom. About 1 km into the trail, you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the beautiful Sari village. There are a few shelters along the way where you can rest. Although the trek from Sari to Deoriatal is easy, it can be a bit tiring for first-timers. The trail winds through scenic forests of Rhododendron and Oak.

When you reach the lake, you’ll find a forest check post. The lake is surrounded by forests, and on a clear day, the reflection of the surrounding mountains in the water is stunning. After enjoying the view, you’ll trek back down to Sari and begin your journey back to Delhi, with your heart full of memories. You’ll arrive in Delhi early the next morning.
