Lansdowne culture inherited only the good things from its migrants’ cultures. Social evils never became a part of Lansdowne culture. Though Pashu-Bali (Animal Sacrifice) is a common phenomenon in various parts of Garhwal and Kumaon, it never developed in Lansdowne. It always stood apart from evils like Sati Pratha, Child Marriage, Animal-Sacrifice or any other orthodox tradition. Every good practice or thought which was for the common good of the society and the country was openly adopted by Lansdowne.

Lansdowne is a quiet and beautiful hill station in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. It is located at a height of about 1,706 meters above sea level and is surrounded by pine and oak forests. Unlike other crowded hill stations, Lansdowne is calm, clean, and perfect for people who want peace and nature.

The town was founded during the British era and is still home to the Garhwal Rifles Regiment of the Indian Army. The neat roads, old churches, and peaceful atmosphere make Lansdowne a unique holiday spot.

Places to see in Lansdowne
 
Garhwali Mess: This Mess was built in Jan 1888 which subsequently became the present mess in 1892. It is one of the oldest buildings in Lansdowne and speaks volumes of heritage and a very high quality of maintenance
Regimental Museum:  A motivational hall was inaugurated at Lansdowne in 1983 to display the rare collection of Garhwal Rifles. This museum is named after Darban Singh Negi.
 
St. Mary’s Church: Construction of St. Mary’s Church began in 1895 by Clone AHB Hume of Royal Engineers and was completed in 1896. St Mary’s Church fell into disuse after 1947 and gradually began to deteriorate. The building has now been restored by Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre with additional facilities of relevant pre independence photographs and audio visual display of Regimental history.
 
Bhulla Tal: Bhulla means “younger brother” in Garhwali and is dedicated to the young Garhwali youth of the Garhwal Rifles who contribute their services day and night in its construction without any Government funds. The boating facilities are also available and the areas around the lakes formed by the dams have been beautified. A children’s park, bamboo machan and fountains have been erected as part of entertainment and beautification of pristine surroundings.
 
Tip-In-Top:  Tip-in-Top is a popular vantage point amongst the tourists visiting Lansdowne. It is on the ridge close to St. Mary’s Church. Once can plan a trek on a sunny day to feel the glorious view of the Himalayas which is unforgettably enchanting.

Tarkeshwar Mahadev:  
It is an ancient temple dedicated to lord Shiva surrounded by thick Cedar trees. It is located 38 kms from Lansdowne at an altitude of 1800 m to the north east of Lansdowne on road Lansdowne-Deriyakhal.

Bhulla Lake: A small and peaceful man-made lake, perfect for boating and spending time with family.

St. Mary’s Church: An old church built during British rule. It has beautiful architecture and a small museum.

Darwan Singh Regimental Museum: A museum dedicated to the Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army. It has weapons, uniforms, and war history.

Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple: About 38 km from Lansdowne, this temple of Lord Shiva is surrounded by tall deodar trees.

Bhima Pakora: A natural wonder where one big stone balances on another. According to legends, it was placed by the Pandavas.

Hawaghar: A peaceful place with beautiful valley views, perfect for a nature walk.

Kanvashram (40 km): An ancient ashram near Kotdwar on the banks of River Malini. It has mythological importance.

  • By Road: Lansdowne is about 250 km from Delhi and can be reached in 6–7 hours by car. Regular buses and taxis are available from Delhi, Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Kotdwar.

  • By Train: The nearest railway station is Kotdwar (40 km away). From Kotdwar, taxis and buses are available to Lansdowne.

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (150 km away). From there, you can take a taxi or bus to reach Lansdowne.

 The nearest major railway station to Kotdwar Railway Station, which is situated at a distance of approximately 40 kilometers from Lansdowne. you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Lansdowne.
