Binsar Overview

Binsar:- Binsar is a remote, naturally exquisite travel destination situated in the lap of mighty Himalayas in the Kumaon Region. It is a place where you can relax with the most awesome views of the Himalayas and remain cut-off from the tiring hustle-bustle of city life. Binsar is located at an altitude of 2,214 m amidst the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary. It is an ideal destination for adventure enthusiasts, nature lover, writers etc. The Binsar Valley offers excellent views of the Himalayan range mainly the famous peaks like Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Nanda Kot, Kedarnath, Panchachuli etc.

Binsar hills are commonly known as Jhandi Dhar offer an amazing view of the nearby places like Almora, the hills around and valleys of Himalayas. Binsar is a perfect place for wildlife photography, bird watching and jungle trekking. It is heaven for nature lovers. There are many beauteous excursions to Binsar that add to the magic of the place.

Binsar is also an ideal location to view the mighty Himalayan ranges like the Chaukhamba, Panchachuli, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and Kedarnath. Binsar remains cool during summers and receives heavy snowfall during the winters. It is highly recommended to take a pair of woollens even during the warmer seasons since the region tends to get chilly. The beautiful forests of Binsar are ideal for a quiet long walks. These walks through the long winding roads amidst dense forests that is alive with the fragrance of wild flowers and a variety of animal sounds is a must do activity here. A trip to the Zero Point offering a magnificent view of the snow capped mountain peaks of the Kedarnath, Shivling, Trishul and Nanda Devi, is one trip that just can’t be missed. Binsar Museum is a treasure trove of information about Binsar and is also a popular attraction here. Japanese Cave or Abaya Binsar is an interesting place for the history buffs and is believed to have been a hide out and logistic center for the Japanese forces. The caves still have guns and all kinds of weaponry stored inside it.

Binsar was the capital of the Chand Dynasty of Kumaon. The Chand Rulers enjoyed their summers here during their rule between 11th and 18th century AD. It is also renowned as the location of a mythological war between Golu Devata and King of Binsar. It is said that Golu Devata was beheaded by some trick. His head fell at Kaparkahan and his trunk at Gairad Dana Golu. Both these places have very old temples of Golu Devata.

By Train: The nearest railhead is Kathgodam which is around 120 kilometers from Binsar.

By Road: Binsar has motorable roads is well-connected to all the major cities of Uttarakhand. The distance from the nearest major town Almora is 30 kilometers and Nainital is 96 kilometers away.
