Binsar was the capital of the Chand Dynasty of Kumaon. The Chand Rulers enjoyed their summers here during their rule between 11th and 18th century AD. It is also renowned as the location of a mythological war between Golu Devata and King of Binsar. It is said that Golu Devata was beheaded by some trick. His head fell at Kaparkahan and his trunk at Gairad Dana Golu. Both these places have very old temples of Golu Devata.
